I am 28 years old, divorced last year after being physically and emotionally abused. I am a single mother with a 5 year old child. I work two jobs, live with my mother again yet I still struggle with money. Doesn't seem different from everyone else does it? I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 6 and my health insurance through my exhusband was used as a way to try to keep me there. See, the thought of not having my lifesaving medications is terrifying. I left despite that threat. I am on two different types of insulin and cannot... (more)

After a sudden seizure last year, I experienced a series of severe organ failure and had to be hospitalized for nearly four weeks in the ICU. The doctors performed dozens of tests and had to conduct several procedures, including rounds of dialysis. Even with health insurance, my medical bills were extremely high. I had to quit going to school to get my masters in order to get more hours in at work. My health insurance provider dropped my coverage at the begining of this year, as I had turned in more than $390,000 in claims from one year.

I didn't agree with most of the things George Bush did, but every time I pick up my prescriptions, I thank God and then I thank President Bush for the Medicare D program that pays for my mediation. This was not a popular move for him but I am grateful that he pushed it through and I respect him for that. It has helped so many ppl. I can remember my mother struggling with prescription costs before she died.
Widowed in 99, I began having health problems only a few years later and have a life threating illness. Medications save my life every... (more)

I work every day morning to night to just pay for my health care and there isn't much money left over to pay for my mortgage & food. I currently pay out $513 a month for just my health insurance because I had a "pre-existing injury" & then I also have to pay out $420 for my husband & daughter together for their family insurance. So that is a TOTAL OF $933 per month for insurance premiums alone!! Now that doesnt even cover my copays, my hospital bills, medicines & etc for my back injury. I am begging Congress to stand... I have grandchildren that are supported by the states KCHIP plan (minimal health care) because my daughter doesn't get enough hours from her employer to qualify for real healthcare. I am about to retire and not sure if I can afford the premiums and drug costs when I live off of Social Security. We have lived frugaly our entire life and still don't know what will happen if one of us has a critical health issue. Please help us.

My father has cancer. The first round of surgeries and medical bills forced my parents to file for bankruptcy. Over the next few years they came back from the bottom, now his cancer has returned. The tests have begun again to determine their next course of action. Already I see the bills rolling in from the portion insurance will not cover. Will history repeat itself? I hope not.
On top of that he is stuck with his current health care, with no chance of having the freedom of choice on his plan.

My dad was diagnosed with a cancer called Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in late 2005. For as long as I can remember my dad worked 2, even 3 jobs to try to make ends meet but still could not afford health insurance. We were from a small town and the small town business my dad worked for did not provide health insurance for their employees. I can recall him sitting down to dinner with me on one Sunday afternoon on his many trips to see me in the city. He told me at that time, "I need some health insurance but its going to cost me $400 dollars a... (more)

I am a divorced parent: I used to support myself as a General Manager of a retail Mall bakery. Last April 4th, 2008, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in one breast and pre-cancer in three areas in my left.I did not hesitate to elect a bi-lateral mastectomy. I had follow-up care of chemo-therapy and 33 radiation treatments. On the last day of July at 6pm a knock on my door saw the delivery of a Fedex package from my employer informing me that from that day on I had to come up with 457.00 per month to pay for Cobra coverage to continue... I really hope you, President Obama, will read this:
I have been a Registered Nurse for 32 years. I have practiced healthcare in hospitals, nursing homes, and now a large Cardiology practice. I believe that tackling healthcare cost must come from 3 fronts concurrently. 1. Medical lawsuits need to reined in, only true neglience and malpractice should be awarded. This is so costly and triggers healthcare waste through the CYA factor. Doctors over order testing to; if you will pardon my language, to cover their ass. 2) insurance - I... (more)

My story is a fairly simple one: I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of 8 or so. I was covered under my father's health benefits at the time, so all well. With the help of medication and psychiatric care, I managed to break my obsessive habits one by one over a period of several years, eventually weaning myself off the medication. I turned 19 two years later, which meant I lost coverage under my father's health benefits. Naturally, I decided to shop around for a health plan of my own - Every quote I received was in... (more)

My Fiance is 28, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about two years ago. She had luckily just gotten health insurance less than 6 months prior (this was the first time she had been covered under health insurance for years). The insurance company fought tooth and nail (unsuccessfully) to have her condition declared a "preexisting condition" so they wouldn't be forced to cover it. During a time when we were under so much stress having to deal with the hard reality of her diagnosis, we spent far too much time fighting with the... (more)

2 years ago, I had a tumor on the right side of my thyroid. After 2 ultrasounds and a biopsy, it was decided by my doctors that the right side of my thyroid needed to be removed. The left side was healthy, and the tumor turned out to be benign, so only the right side was removed. After the surgery, I still had abnormal thyroid labs so I went to an endocrinologist. She wanted to do some further testing to figure out why my thyroid still wasn’t functioning properly. (It was strange because my thyroid was overactive and yet I only had half.)... (more)
