Our family of four purchases our own healthcare with a large deductible. We have 2 small businesses, two teenage children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and a dozen chickens! We are serious, hobbyist organic gardeners. 1-1/2 yrs ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then our premium has risen to an "unregulated" and difficult to manage amount. I didn't work during treatment and because of the economic slow down, I'm only currently working part time. Our other business, harvesting and manufacturing reclaimed antique, barn wood flooring and furniture has also slowed. My husband took time off to care for me and the kids during treatment. Between the 3 years of high deductibles, loss of work and economic slowdown, our previously rosy expectations and reality has dimmed. We are in unprecedented debt, and live in fear of losing health insurance, and I still need more surgery. Our oldest daughter approaches college. We have had to spend her college money on living expenses. We are living month to month at a maturing time of our lives. We have both worked hard and creatively for many years. We are afraid of losing our lives, whereas previously we were responsible for providing employment to others. I believe single payer health insurance is the only right option. But I understand the insurance lobby has immense power in our government. Personally, this family direly NEEDS a regulated premium and some failsafe government-controlled option that would assure my coverage after breast cancer. Something needs to be done, quickly!
