I'm a nurse-midwife working in the Bronx since 1985 at Montefiore, a large medical center that delivers care to people of all walks of life. But many of our clients receive their care through the Medicaid/Medicaid managed care system--our present version of the public option. Over the years,a number of them have gotten good jobs with private insurance that allows them to choose private medical care. And many of those women have chosen to come back to our "public" care center because the care they get there is wonderful, personal and comprehensive. In our clinic we have dedicated social workers, dentists, nurses, nutritionists, health educators, exceptional medical providers such as doctors, specialists, PAs, nurse-midwives and nurse practioners. With of all of the care we give there from basic preventative care to psychotherapy, comprehensive family planning to parenting classes, I know that we save huge amounts in human suffering and dollars for health care costs by preventing much larger problems. This kind of care works wonderfully well. Our patients are satisfied and healthier for the work that we do. We work hard but it is good, satisfying work. Everyone, not just the poor should have access to this type of care. We would all be very proud of our health care system if it worked as well as Montefiore Medical Center does for it's patients. There is absolutely no reason why this can't be available for all people in this country.
