My name is Andrew Kerosky and recently one of my best friends attempted suicide. She is uninsured, and had been seeking treatment for years prior to this incident. She struggles with a condition known as Borderline Personality Disorder, an extremely tenacious and powerful mental disorder. Unable to find a job with benefits that will cover treatment for such an esoteric condition, she has been forced to rely on the under-equipped services at the local university. The counselors there have told her repeatedly that she needs to seek professional help for her disorder, but she simply can't afford the costs. After this most recent stay in the hospital, which has set her back years financially, her outlook has deteriorated even further. Borderline Disorder, particularly her variant, is treatable with medication and therapy, but both those are far more expensive than her means allow for. In the meantime, I feel like I am sitting on a ticking time bomb, waiting for my friend to attempt suicide again, and possibly succeed. It seems to me that treatments for life threatening diseases and disorders should not be withheld from anyone, regardless of financial status. Isn't such a sentiment written into our very constitution? That everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
