I am writing about my niece and her husband. Jeff and Jordan. She works 32 hours per week and does not have health coverage available. She works as a customer service person at a grocery store. Her husband works full time as a cook for a hospital. He makes less than ten dollars per hour. He is a professional chef by trade. He carries the family health care and pays one hundred dollar per week! Out of a fort- hour week at less than ten dollars, this is roughly one quarter of his income that leaves little to live on after taxes. Jordan had surgery for a torn ligament in her shoulder. This was all pre approved and the surgery went well. She has no coverage for short-term disability so now they are living on even less income until she is released to go back to work. Shortly after her surgery, the health care provider notified her that her surgery payment was denied for reason being “pre existing”. She had never before been seen by any medical facility for this injury. The health care still had denied payment and for a young couple barely surviving on little wages, this is a disaster economically. I don’t understand how a pre-approved surgery can be denied and then labeled as pre-existing! This is typical from what I hear from other people also. We need affordable coverage with actual coverage and an end to this pre-existing excuse for denial of payments! We need livable wages to support the cost of living with out being strapped paying high out of pocket medical costs or paying as much for healthcare as one does for rent!
