I am a 59 year old Vet and recovering Addict of 14 years. In August of 2007 I was stricken down by unceasing Migraine headaches. I thought I was going to die, and nearly did! After being off of work for over 30 days, my company had to fill my position and thus laid me off. 30 days after that my Healthcare that they provided also ended. At that point, I was forced to do anything I could to pay to go to the doctor and get my medications. But, I could not afford any more lab tests, complicating my rehabilitation. My Doctor was forced to use trial and error of different medications. It was 9 months overall, before the migraines stopped and in the course I was found to also be diabetic. So as I became poorer my medical costs became greater. I could use the VA system, but the local clinic has no doctors. So to see a doctor you have to ride a van 120 miles to Los Angeles. Plus, there are so many wounded Vets in the system, I feel guilty to use it. When I became healthy enough to go back to work, the recession had taken away literally all of the funding for Addiction Treatment; I am a certified Counselor. I have now been off work for over two years. I have $30,000 of credit card and loan debts that have not been paid on in 18 months. I am now one small step from being a homeless person. I'm 59 years old, no longer can see a normal retirement, afraid of having no home, and praying that no further health problems occur. I need new glasses, and my arthritis has now flared up from all that has happened. Leaving me with insufficient tasking for a full daily life, my overall health is diminishing. It costs money every time you go out the door, so I have to stay home as much as possible. My life is pretty sorry, but I keep praying and trying to find a way out of my predicament. Healthcare may very well have changed this whole scenario!
