My story is about my brother. My brother was diagnosed with Epilepsy when he was an infant. As a child his Epilepsy was well controlled with medication. As he got older his seizures were no longer controlled by medication and became more and more frequent. Since his seizures were so frequent he was unable to drive and took public transportation. A couple times a year he would have a seizure on the bus or in public and would be taken to the emergency room. While in the emergency room he was often hand-cuffed to the bed, sedated or interrogated because the hospital staff thought he was on drugs or alcohol. Had Electronic Medical Records been available this never would have happened to him. The staff could have looked him up in the medical records to see that he had Epilepsy and that there was no need for hand-cuffs, sedation or interrogation. Unfortunately, my brother's battle with Epilepsy ended this past Christmas. He passed away from Sudden Unexpected Death Due to Epileptic Seizure (SUDDEP). I hope that in the future of our health care system, no one ever has to be as mistreated as my brother was because of a lack of information.
